REVIEW: Hiking with HOKA ONE ONE® (TOR ULTRA HI WP & MAFATE 4)

20150812_092811_resizedOVERVIEW

Already huge fans of ultra-lightweight, maximalist, HOKA ONE ONE® sneakers for ultra-running, we couldn’t wait to try out their new hiking/mountain running shoes on Wyoming’s Grand Tetons Crest Trail and in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains. Between the two parks, we backpacked over 100 miles in Hoka One One’s new Tor Ultra Hi WP and Mafate 4.

20150811_091104_resized_2DESIGN FEATURES & FIELD FUNCTIONALITY

Both styles are super lightweight, comfortable and the Tor Ultra Hi ankle support is spot on for stability.

The maximalist outersole foam thickness cushions the foot over long distance terrain. It reduces impact not only to the foot, but the hips, knees and back.

Traction is great! We had no problems trekking on slippery rocks, jumping onto boulders and traversing down scree.

When it comes to size, they run BIG. If you usually buy athletic shoes a full size bigger, go up only ½ a size with Hoka One One. There is a lot of give with the lightweight Upper material that incases the foot. If the shoe feels too big, the foot will move around too much, decreasing support and increasing likeliness of blisters.

Pros:

  • Maximalist cushioning reduces impact to the feet, hips and knees.
  • Super comfortable.
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Upper material is durable, but has a lot of give.

REVIEW: Insulates with Air, NuDown’s Mount Whitney Vest

NuDownCoat

Overview

The next generation of insulating, technical performance outerwear has arrived. Move over down, wool, synthetic and polar fleece… NuDown’s patent pending technology is here and all you need is air.

Ever go skiing, backpacking, hiking, running or do anything outside where you needed to bring an extra layer in case the temperature dropped?

Well, life gets a little easier with NuDown’s self-regulating, air-insulating vest. Add as much as 30ºF of blissful warmth by squeezing a plum-sized pump that fits neatly into one of the vest’s pockets. Getting too warm? Turn the release valve and cool down.

No more stopping to layer or un-layer. Before walking out that door or tent, put on a base layer and a NuDown outdoor vest or jacket and go!

NuDown5Field Functionality & Design Features  NuDown3

I tested NuDown’s Mount Whitney Vest by skiing and hiking in weather that ranged from 65ºF to 20ºF. I was able to keep my core warm and cool down by simply pumping or twisting the release valve. When not in action, the jacket kept me toasty when sitting outside watching soccer and football games.

Similar to a SCUBA divers’ BCD (buoyancy control device) vest, NuDown’s technology uses naturally pumped air that inflates into the welded-chambers of the vest. The wearer regulates the amount of insulation with the small hand pump stored in the outer left pocket.

According to NuDown, for every squeeze of the pump, insulation will increase by 1˚F. Additional pumps can add up to 30ºF of blissful warmth. I had to pump a little more than 30 times to fully inflate the vest, but it was worth the added heat.

When it dropped below freezing, I was thankful for the double-slider, water-resistant, rubberized zipper and high collar that trapped in heat. The Polartech stretch nylon outer layer protected me from the cold winds. Combined with the breathable, moisture-wicking liner, I managed to stay dry, even when climbing up hills or skiing down mountains.

NuDown’s durability is pretty impressive. I fell onto a branch when skiing around a tree on a double black diamond. I was fine and so was the vest. I thought for sure a sharp twig would have punctured it, but no. The 50D 4-way stretch polyester shell didn’t rip and the air chambers stayed firm.  NuDown4

As for fit, I liked the feel of the fully inflated vest. It hugs the body and strangely, made me feel safer. No, it did not look like I had put on an inflatable life vest and was ready to jump off a boat. As a female, it hugged my curves and I like that.

Pros

  • On demand insulation
  • Less layers needed
  • Less packing

Cons

  • If the pump breaks, insulation is compromised.
  • When the vest is inflated, the little hand-pump, stored in the outer pocket, is gently felt against the abdomen.
  • Expensive

Greece: Sail the Aegean Sea on a 60 ft. Cutter

If you want a true sea adventure, skip the boring cruise and set sail for a week on a 60 ft. Cutter with Poseidon Charters. A unique, intimate experience, we had a great time sailing on the Margarita with five other guests, the captain and first mate, on the Aegean Sea in Greece.

We set sail from the Alimos Marina in Athens. Over the weeklong adventure, we visited 6 Greek islands, including Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Kythnos, Ermioni and Epidaurous, hiking, swimming, kayaking, cliff diving and dining. 41y8epk6-kL

Onboard

The Margarita is rustic, yet cozy if you can live without air-conditioning. There is a nice size galley and eating area, four main cabins for guests with their own private bathrooms. You can sleep in your cabin, or if you prefer to gaze at the stars, sleep topside and enjoy the cool breeze.

We learned how to sail, ride the waves and set anchor. Onboard, breakfast and lunch are provided, including mouth watering fresh fruit, salad and healthy Greek food. At night, anchored in the marinas, we dined at enjoyable restaurants in town.

This is a fun adventure and highly recommended for couples and families. Don’t miss this unique opportunity for a real sea adventure! Greece - Sailboats

Iceland Adventure: SCUBA, Hiking, Horses & The Blue Lagoon

Trip Report

An Icelandic Adventure

Iceland is an arctic adventure where you can; hike, dive, dip, ride…and depending on the time of year, view the Aurora Borealis. Sculpted by volcanoes, glaciers, geysers, mountains, lakes, thermal hot springs, black sand beaches and pastures, some say, “If you can’t go to the moon, just go to Iceland.”

Fly into Reykjavik, rent a car or book your adventures through a tour company. Whatever you do, give yourself at least 7-10 days to explore this country.

L1040841Hiking

To get a taste of the country, take 3-4 day and backpack the 48-mile, Laugavegurinn/ Fimmvörðuháls trek. Hike over mountains, lava fields and waterfalls. If the trail isn’t enough, climb one of Iceland’s many volcanoes, like the Hekla and Laki.

Diving Iceland-Scuba

Experience the Silfra Fissure, the only place in the world, you can SCUBA dive directly into the crack between two continental plates. Throw on a dry suit, BCD, tank and jump into Iceland’s Thingvellir Lake to reach out and touch both the North American and Eurasian continents. If you get thirsty, drink from the lake! Filtered through porous underground lava, the ice, blue glacier waters are clean and taste great!

Horseback Riding

When you arrive in Reykjavik, connect with Islenski Henstruinn and ride an Icelandic horse. Traced back to the Vikings, these horses are smaller, more like the size of a pony and are known for their unique ‘tolt’ gait. Developed over generations, to navigate lava terrain, the gait is smooth and speedy, not bumpy or jarring. Icelandic law prohibits any other horses from entering the country and if a horse leaves Iceland, for a competition or any other reason, it can never come back.

Dipping

2013-08-10 09.30.10There are many geothermal spas in Iceland, but the most famous one is,  The Blue Lagoon It is the located in the Grindavik Lava Field on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The 37–39 °C (98–102 °F) waters are rich in skin healing minerals, including silica and sulphur. You can drop in for the day or stay at the adjacent hotel and pamper yourself with one of their many spa treatments.

When in Reykjavik, go see a show a the iconic, glass Harpa concert hall.

**Bonus Adventure**: There are day tours to Greenland! Go see this frozen country and see for yourself why Greenland is Ice and Iceland is Green!sinopsis film

Trip Report

Serengeti, Tanzania & The Kirawira Serena Luxury Camp

If Robinson Crusoe were stranded in the middle of Africa, The Kirawira Serena Luxury Camp is what I’d picture he’d build.

Located in Western Serengeti, 334km from Arusha the main climbing hub for Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Kirawira is the epitome of a classic ‘Out of Africa’ luxury safari camp. The 25 widely spaced luxury, canvas tents each sit on raised timber platforms with incredible views of the plains and Acacia trees. Victorian bedroom and bathroom furnishings are styled to replicate the elegant hunting camps of such legendary ‘white hunters’ as Denys Finch Hatton and Baron Bror Blixen. The amenities include a massage area, pool and an open lounge area where you can relax, converse about your day over a cocktail, read, play chess or backgammon while looking out over the Serengeti. The food is amazing and dinner is a set, five-course meal. The Kirawira is a great place to recoup after a long safari. Stay for a couple days and arrange to do a hot air balloon safari, over the Serengeti, that includes a wonderful breakfast when you land. Between the camp and balloon ride, this was one of the most unique and amazing experiences of my life. This experience is well worth the price.
